08 Mar Know The Brand: Made by Malyia
Malyia McNaughton traded in the 9-5 life to chase her dreams and boy did she take off running! The jewelry designer makes classic accessories that can be worn with just about anything. If I could sum her line up in one word it would be TIMELESS. A pair of earrings, necklace or body chain worn today could be worn in 20 years. That’s a talent! In addition to her jewelry designs, Malyia is embarking on a whole new journey that involves pulling confidence out of women through her styling and consulting firm. To add to her long list of accomplishments, she just signed her very first modeling contract. Aspiring entrepreneurs, take note. Malyia has accomplished more in the last years than she has working for another company.
Meet the designer, the entrepreneur, the model. Get acquainted.
How did you embark on the Made by Malyia journey?
I initially designed my first body chain because I couldn’t find one on the market that fit my taste level so I decided to handcraft my own. After I wore my design to a music festival all my friends wanted to buy it on the spot. This motivated me to set up a store on Etsy.com and the response was overwhelming. It started as a side hustle but quickly grew to be a creative outlet from my 9-to-5 where I was no longer fulfilled. I decided to leave my job as a buyer at a fashion company in December 2015 to focus on the business full time.
Tell me a bit more about your styling business and the other services you offer.
My sister Vanessa and I are partners in a fashion and image consulting company launching summer 2016. The goal is re-branding the wardrobe of the working professional and creative. It will encompass preparing them for a special occasion, a new career, and we will also consult start up fashion brands using our combined years of experience in the fashion industry.
Made by Malyia is a beautifully designed accessory line that is completely different from the overbearing accessories we see today. Classic, simple and edgy are how I’d define your pieces. What is your overall vision for the line in terms of construction?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from indigenous tribes, nature, art and architecture. It was designed so you can layer the entire collection without being over accessorized.
Tell me about your latest collection.
My latest infinity collection consists of the unique, delicate and hand-crafted designs my jewels have grown to love. I am still offering faux nose rings and as well as body chains. I’ve added new offering in precious metals and colors including silver and rose gold. The line is evolving but I am remaining true to the brand.
What is your five year plan?
I’m looking forward to a design collaboration with a major retailer, opening a flagship store and launching a home collection. I want to continue to grow my modeling career as well as fashion and consulting business.
Who is the Made by Malyia customer?
My jewels and gems are fearlessly navigating through life and enjoy standing out from the crowd. They are influential with a free-spirited alter ego and self-expressive style.
