23 Aug I’m a Quitter… and I’m Okay With That
When I decided to quit Fashion Bomb Daily, I had no idea what was in store for me. All I knew was that the time had come for me to move on. My trip to South Africa made me realize that I wanted to commit myself to more than just fashion. With all the turmoil going on in the world, I wanted to be a voice for other communities. I wanted to discuss mental health, body shaming, homelessness, empowerment and so much more. I couldn’t do all of that if I limited myself to one genre. So I quit. I walked away from one of the fastest growing multicultural online magazines to pursue a career as a freelance journalist.
I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know if I could do it. Why would people be interested in what I have to say? Still, I’d spend my days emailing publications my pitches, eagerly awaiting their response. I emailed ALL of my friends in media and asked them to contact their friends and associates who worked for magazines. I wanted in and I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Through networking, I was able to meet some interesting people. I emailed them all. I’d be lying if I told you my inbox was flooded. It was DRY AF. I was so sad! I decided to enroll in a Professional Studies course at NYU about creating the perfect pitch. To my surprise, I learned that I was on the right track when it came to pitching articles. So why wasn’t anyone responding to me? Nothing happens before its time. Within two months I was published to Blavity and Huffington Post.
The good Lord taught me a thing or two about being patient. If I had stayed in my comfort zone, I would have never challenged myself to see what else I am capable of. Magic, growth and happiness happens outside of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to quit what no longer serves you to pursue the unknown. Don’t be afraid to quit something that keeps you in your comfort zone. Get uncomfortable! Challenge yourself!
*Editors Note- Writing about fashion was my comfort zone, NOT the specified publication. That said, my freelance work will include a wide spectrum of articles that may include fashion from time to time. I am shifting my focus.
